Compatible Materials
Material selection is a crucial component of the rotomolding process. Different plastics have different physical characteristics (e.g., impact strength, flammability, heat deflection, etc.) which directly affects the suitability for your intended application. We work with top thermoplastic providers to offer a wide selection of materials, ensuring every part we mold is made from the highest quality materials and performs precisely how it should.

What is rotational Molding?
Rotational molding (also known as rotomolding) is a process which uses low cost tooling and engineered resins to produce seamless, durable, hollow plastic products.
The rotomolding process produces parts with uniform wall thickness, strong, virtually stress free outside corners, and a seamless design, making it a popular choice for parts that need to be inherently lightweight yet sturdy.
The process’ versatility also allows design and production flexibility, allowing you to produce complex shapes with undercuts, ribbing structures, textures, colors, molded-in threaded inserts, colored graphics, and expanded polyethylene, double wall sections.
Process
Mold Fabrication
A mold, typically made of stainless steel or aluminum, is fabricated. The mold comprises two or more sections that fit together to form a cavity in the shape of the desired product.
Loading the mold
A measured amount of plastic resin (usually in powder or pellet form) is placed into a hollow metal mold. The mold is securely closed to prevent leaks during the process.
Heating & Rotation
The mold is placed in an oven and rotated biaxially (in two directions) at a slow, constant speed. As the mold rotates, the heat causes the plastic resin to melt and coat the inner surface of the mold with completely uniform thickness.
Cooling the mold
The mold is removed from the oven and cooled gradually using air or water sprays. As the material cools, it solidifies and retains the shape of the mold
Part Removal
Once the plastic has fully set, the mold is carefully opened, and the formed plastic part is removed.
cnc Trimming
If necessary, the part is trimmed to the precise specs required using a 5-axis CNC router.
Advantages
- Design Flexibility: Rotational molding allows for complex shapes and intricate designs.
- Cost-Effectiveness: Compared to other molding processes, rotomolding often requires simpler, cheaper molds, making it an economical option for low to medium production runs.
- Uniform Thickness & Seamless Construction: The uniform wall thickness and seamless design inherent to rotomolding improves the structural integrity and durability of the final product and reduces the risk of cracks, leaks, or weak points.
- Customization: Rotomolding enables easy customization of design, color, graphics, etc.
- Suitable for Large Parts: Rotomolding is capable of producing larger parts than other methods.
- Materials: Compatible with a wide range of thermoplastic materials, allowing manufacturers to choose materials that suit their specific needs, such as UV resistance, chemical resistance or food-grade properties.
- Shorter Lead Times: The simplicity of the rotational molding process makes it ideal for short runs and rush deliveries.
- Eco-Friendly: Rotomolding produces little to no waste as excess resin can be reused, resulting in a lower environmental impact.
